Mental Health in Schools: The Current Crisis!

Updated: May 13, 2018

School mental health is an epidemic right now and most schools are severely understaffed/unequipped to truly handle it. The average case load for a counselor in the US today is roughly 500 students. How can someone truly properly handle the mental health of students when in many cases there are students whom the counselor might not even know? It is not their fault! The schools need to have added funding for mental health to lower the case load of counselors and have social workers available to all schools. High poverty schools should have an even lower ratio of teacher to student support. This article articulates this issue in detail and needs to be read and addressed at the national level!
